I am truly grateful to be able to do this job every day! It’s been a long and winding journey to reach this point. I began in my early 20’s working as a CNA for a large home health company. I took a break, relocating to I moved to San Francisco Bay Area. It was there I started a successful janitorial service, quickly growing from one customer to having over 100. The company was thriving but I realized this was not fulfilling me. I felt like I could do more. I longed to help others on a deeper level and knew I wanted to continue my path working in health care. In my 30s I ventured back into community health as a Life Skills Coach (LSC) working with adults who have intellectual disabilities. By this time, my girls had graduated high school and it was time to explore my next step.
While running my own business and working LSC, I enrolled in college at San Jose State University and obtained my B.S. and M.S. in Occupational Therapy. Since graduating in 2013, I have practiced as an occupational therapist in skilled rehabilitation, home health, and out-patient home health services in home, assisted living and memory care units. During graduate studies, my thesis focused on how community-dwelling elders defined successful aging.
Through my research, I discovered that older adults fear losing their independence more than death. It also became apparent that older adults are often isolated. They are frequently under-represented, their available programs are limited, and they face discrimination. This has a huge impact on older adults' quality of life and independence. The same themes continuously resurfaced: caregiver fear of not being able to care for aging loved one, being unable to afford hired caregivers, repeated falls, re-hospitalizations, fear of losing independence, fear of being institutionalized, and caregivers not being able to care for one’s own self. These fears are commonplace and real!
I’ve spent over 20 years helping others rehabilitate, recover their independence, and become a better version of themselves. I decided to use my knowledge and experience to help others better manage medical conditions, avoid repeated falls and re-hospitalizations, and slow down the aging process so they are able to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. At Heart & Soul Senior Fitness, we strive to help seniors and older adults improve their strength, balance, flexibility, mobility, and cognition necessary to being independent so they can be the BEST, happiest, healthiest version of themselves.
My education, experience as an LSC and OT, and my life-long passion for caring for others’ health and nutrition provides the framework for Heart and Soul Senior Fitness. My goal is to provide you with a personalized experience when it comes to meeting your health and fitness goals. I provide encouragement, guidance, education, and client-centered programming. Together we build healthy lifestyle habits to improve your quality of life. Physical activity and good nutrition is essential to living healthier and being independent.
